GHS08: the health hazard pictogram
Rules last checked 25 September 2026. A labelling reference, not legal advice.
GHS08 is the CLP hazard pictogram with the health hazard symbol (Annex V, 2.4). Among the hazard classes the candle and home-fragrance tools cover, it goes on the label for:
- Respiratory sensitisation, Category 1 (incl. 1A/1B): H334, "May cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled"
- STOT single exposure, Category 1: H370, "Causes damage to organs"
- Aspiration hazard, Category 1: H304, "May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways"
Precedence
When a label would carry more than one pictogram, Article 26(1) removes some:
- Article 26(1)(d): if GHS08 applies for respiratory sensitisation, GHS07 does not appear for skin sensitisation or for skin and eye irritation.
The pictogram is a black symbol on a white background inside a red diamond. The candle and home-fragrance tools draw it from the official GHS artwork published by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The symbol is the same in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
